How and why do you come to support Wood Street Mission?
Corporate Social Responsibility has long been an integral part of Kings Chambers’ ethos and culture. Members of Chambers embrace the concept of giving back to the local community, whether through education, pro bono work, volunteering, or involvement in community projects. Staff are actively encouraged to participate and are provided with paid days off to enable them to volunteer.
Whilst we had undertaken fundraising and supported various charities for many years, in 2013 we started thinking about a nominated charity for chambers and one in our local community. We unanimously decided on supporting Wood Street Mission as it provides such vital support services for families living in poverty in the local community.
Our first fundraiser was the Christmas Appeal, which allowed members of staff (including barristers) with young families to involve their children in choosing gifts for other children of a similar age.
What have you done to support us?
As a longstanding supporter of Wood Street, over the years we have supported many Christmas and Easter appeals, which have since been replaced by the Books Forever Appeal. Additionally, we have contributed to Family Basics, supported the 150-year anniversary dinner, and participated in quiz nights. We actively encourage everyone to take part in volunteering days, and once slots are offered, they are typically snapped up. Some of our colleagues have also taken part in other fundraisers, such as sporting events, to raise money.
Why have you continued to support Wood Street for over ten years now?
We’re proud to support a charity that is working to alleviate the impact of poverty on children and families in our local community.
The staff and volunteers at Wood Street work incredibly hard to provide practical support for so many people. It’s extremely rewarding to play a small role in enabling them to do this.
What is the most fun or rewarding part of supporting Wood Street?
We enjoy seeing updates from the charity on social media and through newsletters. our fundraising is having an impact is of course not only rewarding but also heartwarming.
Volunteering days are also not only rewarding but also enjoyable. Those who choose to volunteer tend to return year after year, which speaks volumes about the experience. Our members and staff who make donations for the various appeals enjoy involving their children in selecting the gifts and books we provide. After all, children are the experts on toys!
How do you get your team involved with supporting us?
We primarily raise awareness through email circulars and internal newsletters. Over the years, we’ve found that most people don’t need much encouragement; everyone is eager to get involved, whether it’s through physical participation or making a contribution.
There are some overwhelming statistics about the number of children living in poverty in Manchester and Salford. What would you say to someone who wanted to make a difference with this issue – either individually, or with their families, with their school, with their colleagues at work, with people in the community?
Don’t just think about it, get involved! It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the statistics, but even the smallest actions can make a big difference. There are so many ways to show support; whether it’s volunteering your time, donating resources, or advocating for change, every effort counts. You won’t regret it, and the rewards of helping others are immeasurable.
